His Etui and a small Papercut Figure

A finely made etui, bone with black lacquered decoration and mounted with gilded metal, understood to have belonged to the beloved Danish author best known for such classic fairy tales as “The Ugly Duckling,” “The Red Shoes,” and “The Emperor’s New Clothes.” Enclosed is a handwritten note in an early unidentified hand reading "Hans Christian Andersens Etui" and "Harboe" to verso, along with a small paper cut of a bull, apparently accomplished by the author.  Etui measures 2.5 x 5 x .5 inches (6.5 x 13 x 1.5 cm.). Text, in full: "Dear Sir, Sir James Barrie directs me to thank you very much for your letter and expresses his great regret at the impossibility of his being able to leave England. He much appreciates the honor of the invitation and is so sorry not to be able to come to Boston. He is also very sorry not to be able to have the pleasure of meeting you, but he has left London for some time. Yours faithfully, C. Greene (for Sir James Barrie)." Considered to be one of the first toy books ever printed, the extremely scarce first of three "Painted Toy-Books" designed by Walter Crane, issued as part of the "New Shilling Series" in Fall 1865.  Read More...

Four Prints from "The Tours of Dr. Syntax"

Four lithograph illustrations by the English artist, taken from editions of William Combe's three Dr. Syntax poems, Dr. Syntax in Search of the Picturesque, Dr. Syntax in Search of Consolation, and Dr. Syntax in Search of a Wife.  Three of the four prints, "The Revd. Doctor Syntax" [No PN], "Doctor Syntax Made Free of the Cellar" [PN 15], and "Doctor Syntax Returned from His Tour" [PN 28], are from Dr. Syntax in Search of the Picturesque, the latter two dated to 1815 in the publisher's tagline.  The fourth print, "The Visit of Dr. Syntax to the Widow Hopefull at York," is from In Search of Consolation, and is dated 1820, though much of the publisher's tagline has been trimmed.  Light to moderate foxing to margins and verso of all four prints, with an area of staining to "The Revd. Doctor Syntax" that is especially prominent to verso, but the images themselves are in fine condition.  Three prints 9 x 5 inches (22.9 x 12.7 cm.), fourth 6.5 x 10 inches (16.5 x 25.4 cm.). "Le voiturier" – Signed Lithograph from "Les hommes abandonnés"

Lithograph by the French painter, who has signed to the lower right-hand corner in pencil.  One of a series of 24 lithographs created for an illustrated edition of Duhamel's short story collection Les hommes abandonnés published by Marcel Seheur in 1927, the work depicting a dismal and lonely scene, a man walking in solitude down an empty, shadowed street.  Matted and framed with a placard reading "MAURICE DE VLAMINCK / 1876–1958 / Duhamel's "Les Hommes Abandoneés" / Frapier Collection."  Unexamined out of frame but in apparently fine condition.  Sheet measuring 9 x 11.5 inches (22.9 x 29.2 cm.), framed to 15.5 x 18 inches (39.4 x 45.7 cm.).
